A Mental Health First Responder (or First Aider) is someone trained to notice when another person may be struggling, start a supportive conversation, listen effectively and help them towards appropriate support. They are also known in the business world as Mental Health First Aiders.
They are not counsellors or mental health professionals, and their role is not to diagnose or treat mental health conditions. Instead, they provide an early, practical and human response when someone may need help.
Mental Health First Responders develop the confidence to recognise signs of distress, respond appropriately when there may be concerns about someone’s safety, understand their own boundaries and know when and how to involve further support.
The aim is not to have all the answers. It is to notice, ask, listen & respond appropriately and know what to do next.
