Mental Health Advocate
Understand. Support. Advocate.
A practical one-day course for people who want to become Mental Health Advocates — helping create workplaces and communities where mental health is better understood, talked about openly and treated without stigma or judgement.
Despite greater awareness, stigma, misunderstanding and uncertainty can still prevent people from talking about their mental health or seeking support. Others may notice someone struggling but worry about saying the wrong thing.
Mental Health Advocates can help change that culture.
They are not counsellors or mental health professionals. They encourage understanding, challenge myths and unhelpful language, notice when someone may be struggling and help make supportive conversations part of everyday life.
The course develops the confidence and practical skills to notice, approach, listen and respond supportively using the CARE Framework — Connect, Ask, Respond, Enable — while understanding boundaries and when to encourage further support.
-
Promote understanding — help make mental health something people can talk about openly and appropriately.
-
Challenge stigma — question myths, assumptions and unhelpful language that can discourage people from speaking up.
-
Encourage conversation — help create a culture where checking in with someone feels normal rather than exceptional.
-
Notice and approach — recognise when somebody may be struggling and have the confidence to start a supportive conversation.
-
Listen and support — provide appropriate everyday support without trying to diagnose, counsel or “fix” someone.
-
Enable further support — know the limits of the Advocate role and help people identify appropriate sources of additional help when needed.

Mental Health Advocates help create a culture where mental health is better understood and easier to talk about.
They encourage everyday conversations about wellbeing, challenge stigma and unhelpful language, notice when someone may be struggling and help people feel more comfortable seeking support.
They are not counsellors or mental health professionals; their role is to provide appropriate everyday support and help people towards further help when needed.

Participants leave better equipped to recognise when someone may be struggling, start supportive conversations, challenge stigma in their communities and businesses and understand the boundaries of their role.
